High Street Challenge - Background

The Walworth Society is pleased to announce that we have a new and exciting project which will animate our streets. This is a Southwark Council High Street Challenge funded project which will create fourinteractive history based tours of the Walworth area. The tours will offer peoplenew insights about the heritage, culture and diversity of Walworth. The project aims to strengthencommunity and business partnerships to promote the local area as well as to entertain and inform residents and everyone who comes along on the tours.

So what will this exciting project achieve:

(1) Develop 4 interactive themed tours. This will be on 4 Saturdays from July through to September 2016. Our aim is that 2000 participants will get involved on the tours/ or see the various animations of history. We will be linking in each tourwith our local partners such as Camberwell Fair, Pasley Park and Plaza Latina.

(2) Providing archival material on the history of our shopping streets and centres. Our aim is to have 3 displays to animate historical local businesses.

(3) Develop a steering group involving business, local people, community organisations/ networks. Our aim is to have 20 participants in the steering group.

(4) Develop a local team of artists, actors, dancers and musicians to animate the streets as part of the tour.

(5) Connect to 5000 local people through displays, artworks, installations, tours and the educational strand of the project.

(6) Create merchandise to promote local business around the branding of ‘I Love Walworth’.

(7) Create a fully detailed report on the results of this project on the streets and centers. It will look to the future of our community and how we make it a destination of choice to socialise inand shop.

So how can people get involved/ help publicise:

·         Join the steering group along with members of the Walworth Society to help add to the talents we have in the society. This could be helping out with research, or marshalling on tours or helping with the design of the merchandise on the tours.

·         Local businesses areinvited to join the steering group to look at how we animate our High Streets and bring new footfall and economic benefits to the Walworth Road.

·         We ask our local partners in the press such as the South London Press and the Southwark News to help us publicise the exciting and innovative way in which to animate our streets using its history and heritage.

·         Maybe you have some old pictures or even some great stories about Walworth and its history. We would love you to share these with us and we look forward to hearing from you.
